Canopy Redesign

Stratus Aeronautics

Due to component changes on Stratus' 6100B drone, the drone canopy needed to be redesigned in order to maintain its ingress protection (IP) rating against rainfall. To better define the project, I led meetings between the drone operators, engineers, and business team to understand the requirements and set a reasonable project scope.

Next, I used Solidworks surface modelling to iterate and design a canopy, with key goals being aerodynamics and manufacturability. I also developed a comprehensive test procedure to verify the IP rating of the canopy under simulated flight conditions.

Finally, I worked with a manufacturer to fabricate the canopies, ensuring they understood our design constraints and that they arrived in time. Currently, the canopies are in use on the 6100B drones, and have flown over ten-thousand kilometers in Brazil during their rainy season.
